grrRls in the garej and the mini-monument lab
introduction
As part of Llawn 08, Llandudno’s Arts Weekend, I was delighted to collaborate with Lisa Hudson and Wanda Zyborska as GRRRLS in the GAREJ, at HAUS.
More than 200 people came to edit and add to an underground story (and giant map) of Llandudno from 16,000 years ago to present through the stories of the women that i’d researched over the last year (see the stories here). Via the event and the “You Know You Are From Llandudno If…” facebook site, we gathered many new stories, from past, present and future lives of the everyday and extraordinary.
We also debated the role of monuments and memorialising, had tea and cake and celebrated women’s stories by inviting everyone to make some mini-merched-monuments in the DIY MINi-MONUMENT LAB. On the Sunday, we went on a Monument Placing Procession, making Llandudo the first town in history to monumentalise its women.
Making these temporary mini-monuments to ‘ordinary’ and ‘extraordinary’ women, past, present and future was a radical act of questioning who is monumentalised and why… read more here
